GM debuts alternative fuel vehicles at L.A. auto show
General Motors Corp. rolled out a number of eco-friendly vehicles -- including a plug-in Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid and hybrid versions of the Saturn Aura and GMC Yukon -- at the L.A. Auto Show media preview on Wednesday.
GM now has eight hybrid vehicles in GM's fleet.
"I can't give you a date certain for our plug-in hybrid today," said GM CEO Richard Wagoner said in his prepared remarks published in The Detroit News, "but I can tell you that this is a top priority program for GM, given the huge potential it offers for fuel-economy improvement."
GM isn't the only automaker showing off hybrids. Ford will show off its new 2008 Escape Hybrid. BMW displayed a Hydrogen 7, the world's first hydrogen-powered performance sedan that emits water vapor.
GM's two-mode hybrids run for an extended time on battery power and switch to gasoline or diesel engine when the battery is low. Eventually, GM plans to have 12 hybrids on the market.
