Chrysler launches last of new vehicles in 2006
The Chrysler Group will begin production of the Jeep Patriot on Dec. 20 — the last of 10 new vehicles Chrysler debuted in 2006.
Chrysler is counting on the new vehicles to jumpstart lagging sales. It lost $1.5 billion in the third quarter. It has gotten early success with the Dodge Caliber and four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
Among the new vehicles: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8; Caliber; Compass; Aspen; Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited; Dodge Nitro; Chrysler Sebring; and Dodge Ram 3500 Chassis Cab.
Ford to expand Mustang lineup?
Ford’s iconic Mustang could expand from a sports coupe into sedan and wagon models, according to AutoWeek Magazine. Ford officials met last fall to consider expanding the Mustang’s role globally as part of a plan to take the car mainstream. The cars could join the sports coupe when the sixth-generation Mustang goes on sale in the U.S. in 2011, AutoWeek sources said.
Report: Ford to expand dual clutch transmissions in Europe, U.S.
Beginning in late 2007, diesel models of Volvo’s S40 and V50 will have dual-clutch transmissions, said a story in Automotive News Europe. The transmissions will also go into Ford Motor Co.’s European vehicles, including Land Rover, Mazda and the Ford Focus and Focus C. It will replace continuously variable transmissions and automatics.
The Volvo S40 and V50 will also get design changes, according to a Volvo source.
And Ford is also considering dual-clutch transmissions for smaller models in the U.S., a source told Automotive News.
Dual clutch transmissions offer the option of driving in an automatic model with higher fuel savings.
